Mood Alteration (VSFX-316, Bridget Gaynor, Winter 2024)
For this project, we were tasked to model and light a scene using a shot from a movie as reference. I chose this simple but colorful shot by Michael Fimognari in the movie Fast Color, intrigued by the challenge of color matching with materials and lighting.
Throughout the project, I learned to use Nuke's histogram and waveform tools for matching lighting, as well as solidified my knowledge of procedural texturing, lighting and modeling.
Photoshop - texture editing
Maya - modeling and scene bulding
Nuke - color matching tools
After Effects - final video edit
In addition to the lighting/mood match, we were later tasked to create an alternative render; either making changes in models, lighting or camera position.
To contrast the previous render, I wanted to create something that provokes a sense of nostalgia or familiarity. I used softened shades of blue and orange, camera blur, and subtle environment changes to evoke that kind of mood.
Through the alteration, I gained a better understanding of the importance of lighting, shadow direction and small details that bring a project together.
